Rebecca Weingartner has already been a featured artist at PURPLE with her works “EQUALITY!” and “SOLIDARITY!”. With “GUGUS!”, she offers a refreshingly unconventional interpretation of the concept of freedom. Inspired by the Dada movement — that 20th-century artistic rebellion against logic, reason, and capitalist constraints — the production explores how we can free ourselves from the pressure to perform and (re)discover the pure joy of playfulness and the absurd. On stage, the two circus artists Demian Bucci and Guilhèm Charrier meet and whisk the audience away into a world full of nonsense, acrobatics, dance, onomatopoeia, music, and noise. They defy gravity, float through the air, transform into whimsical creatures, and leave everyday life—with its compulsive logic of growth and self-optimization—far behind.
“Gugus” is a Swiss German word that means both “hello” and “nonsense.”
