In “STUCK”, her first piece as a choreographer, the international waacking icon Mounia Nassangar explores the way dance can provide a language, or a form of expression, for things that evade spoken communication – for when words fail us and we get verbally stuck. Her work builds directly on the history of waacking, a free dance that emerged as a reaction to oppression. The five performers on the stage each describe their personal version of this history as shaped by different bodies and stories, throwing light on the culture with sensitivity and from individual perspectives.

While voguing has its roots in New York, waacking emerged on the West coast of the USA, in Los Angeles, as the dance of the LGBTQ disco scene in the 70s – in a period when queer people were largely unseen and stigmatised. The style is mainly distinguishable by its rotational arm movements, posing and emphasis on expressiveness.
